SWTOR Asia Pacific Launch is Official: March 1st

Bioware are officially launching in the Asia Pacific region on March 1st.

This launch has caused some concern in the community, not only from Australians who might find themselves transferring servers to take advantage of lower ping times, but also from people in the US who are playing on servers with a high population of Australian players. Bioware are offering a free opportunity for qualifying players (those in the region) to transfer their characters to one of the new servers.

What will happen to the servers that are highly populated at the moment once all the Aussie and New Zealanders who have been playing already for months jump ship? Will these servers become ghost towns? And what will happen to guilds on these servers? All of a sudden half of some guilds will have an opportunity to transfer.

As a guild leader and a player based in Australia, I can tell you that this is a hard decision. About 65% of my guild is not Australian but that majority is spread across North America and Europe. Many of us have been friends for ten years in MMO games and if Australian servers were made available from the start, the US and UK players in my guild would have joined us on an Australian server, since most players in the guild are based in Australia. An option that Bioware might have is to convert the servers that currently have a high population of Australian players to an Asia Pacific server and then allow the Americans and Europeans who don't want to remain there to transfer off. But then again that might upset those players who enjoy that server and don't want to have to move. No matter what Bioware do it will cause problems and all we can do as a player base is tell Bioware ... we told you so. You should have launched Asia Pacific labelled servers from the get go, regardless of whether the servers were physically in the region at the time.

SWTOR Developer Q&A Highlights

In the community news this week the developers published a Q&A which took place in the forums. Although a lot of the news had already been covered via the dev tracker, there were a couple of little highlights that you may find interesting. 

First of all, Daniel Erickson talked about game update 1.2 and the legacy system, and then there were some gems from Gabe about future changes to the PvP system, which include a new warzone that is capable of same-faction matches. Gabe also talked about cross-server warzones coming soon. By the sounds of it, we're going to get a hell of a lot of changes to this game in patch 1.2.

Daniel Erickson: Game Update 1.2 will bring you the first big step in the Legacy System but it’s important to understand that the Legacy System will continue to grow, bringing new options to new characters (alts) and some fun options for elder game players as well. Legacy is definitely not just for new characters! The species that will be unlocked in Game Update 1.2 are species currently in the game that will become available to classes and factions where you haven’t seen them before. New species are in consideration for the future but we don’t have any details to share right now. Look for more specific details in the near future as we head toward Game Update 1.2.

Daniel Erickson: We’ve been pleasantly surprised at how popular PvP is in The Old Republic and we’ve been doubling down on our efforts to bring exciting new content and systems to the PvP community. Right now there’s a new Warzone planned for Game Update 1.2 which we’re already testing internally and really enjoying. We can say it’s enabled for same faction vs. same faction play, so if you’ve been playing a lot of Huttball, expect some variety soon! Also coming in 1.2 is the pre-season of our Warzone ranking system, bringing better matchmaking which means better PvP. In the future expect a ton more PvP news as we expand and polish what has proven to be one of the most popular aspects of The Old Republic. We’ve got big plans.

Gabe Amatangelo: Not until we introduce cross server queuing. If we were to allow players to choose their Warzone before they could queue across servers, then it would negatively affect how often every player would see a Warzone – and for every player that loves a certain Warzone there is another player that hates it. The population would end up divided by their Warzone choice, negatively affecting the time it would take for a specific Warzone to become available for anyone. With cross server queuing we will still have a preference to match players of the same server, but those players who choose specific preferences such as these will likely end up in a match with players in the larger Wargroup.

SWTOR New Players Guide: Lesson One

If you are, like many SWTOR players, new to MMOs but playing it or hoping to play SWTOR because of a love of Star Wars, welcome to my world and let's find out about it together! Welcome young Padawans! This is going to be like the blind leading the blind! Let me explain ...

John, who set up this site is my husband. We met over 17 years ago at ... wait for it ... a Star Wars fan club Christmas party! So you might think that we've both been playing Star Wars: The Old Republic since the day of launch but actually, I've never played an MMO before. A couple of years ago, after months of begging, I set up a character in WoW and played through one mission, nearly died of boredom and never played it again. But SWTOR is Star Wars and the allure is too hard to ignore.


I am sooo new to this I didn't even take any fraps shots of myself from the front last night! Tip: make sure you like the back of your character's hairdo; you'll see it a lot.

Years ago I played fps games, almost obsessively for a while there. I was pretty good too if I do say so myself. So I am no stranger to playing PC games which means that when I write about it, I hopefully won't sound like a complete idiot from the Outer Rim. Hiding behind all that though is someone who is not used to all the options and controls in an MMO, so I will learn to play and explain it all. Besides, I'll have John sitting right next to me explaining things.

Last night I created a Jedi Consular character and I completed one class mission and two side missions. Here's some tips on things that you might miss:


As you get to the stage where it's time to learn new things a little rectangle with a yellow border will pop up center right. Click on it and it will explain how to use something (maps, groups, inventory, etc).


After you've got a mission, if you need to travel to get to where it is, look for the double green arrow. That's where you need to head, in this case, to get a taxi.


But then when thee are many mission objectives they are shown by little green triangles with a yellow border. Head to each of them in turn.

Surge rating has been re-balanced. It now reaches diminishing returns the same way as other damage ratings, and its per point damage contribution has been reduced by approximately 10%.

Non-stackable crafting materials are now refunded if the crafting assignment is canceled.

Crafting Exotech consumables now results in three items with a chance of one additional item on a crafting critical.

General
Conversation rewards like Social and Alignment Points and Companion Affection are gained more consistently during Hard Mode Flashpoints.

In Hard Mode, players are no longer blocked from re-entering the Flashpoint in some circumstances when the group is defeated during the encounter with Jorland.

The chest in 8-man Nightmare Mode now spawns properly after defeating Karagga.

General
Unique items can no longer be traded to a player that has the maximum number of that item in their inventory.
A confirmation dialog is now displayed when purchasing items with commendations or tokens and when purchasing expensive items.

A confirmation dialog is now displayed when choosing a Legacy name. The UI has been updated to better communicate Legacy name decisions.




Missions and NPCs

Small amounts of Social Points are no longer lost in some circumstances (rarely at the beginning of a Flashpoint or in some mission conversations).
Bonus Series missions on Tatooine (Republic and Imperial) can now be abandoned.

Imperial
Eve of Destruction: This mission progresses properly even if the player does not immediately travel to Corellia.


Republic
Need to Impress: Resolved a dialogue issue with Ambassador Jannik that blocked progress in this mission.
Rapid Response: This mission can now be failed if the player leaves the mission phase while attempting to destroy the Bomb-Carrying Droids.
Taris Bonus Series: The cinematic for the objective "Return to Storm" now completes properly even if the player has not finished Reconstruction Efforts.


PvP
General
Fixed an issue causing players to not receive Warzone Win mission credit upon winning a Warzone match when the first player to enter the zone leaves the zone before the match concludes.


World PvP


Ilum
Players are now notified when they kill a player but do not receive credit due to rate limits.


Miscellaneous Bug Fixes
Players are no longer occasionally disconnected from the game when interacting with a mailbox.
Players no longer lose mouse click functionality in some circumstances after pressing multiple mouse buttons.

The Many Looks of Kira Carsen

In SWTOR you spend a lot of time with your companion and a lot of a players even have intimate relationships with their companions of choice. Unfortunately, you don't have a Galaxy of companions to choose from. Your storyline introduces you to a set number of companions and you are stuck with their stories, personalities and voices.

Bioware do give you the options to customize the appearance of your companions. You can change their looks by equipping a companion customization token in your companion's inventory. These customizations are awarded through missions and they are also available through speciality vendors throughout the Galaxy.

This week I want to take an advanced look at all the different available looks for Kira Carsen.

Kira is a strong willed individual and my personal favorite companion so far. My Jedi Knight Guardian completed with storyline with Kira some time ago and although I chose to leave her default looks, not everyone likes a redhead. And to be honest, after seeing the variety of different looks she can have, I've now chosen to equip customization 8. Let's have a good look shall we?



Customizations 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 are available from vendors on both Taris and Balmora.



The vendor's name on Taris is Tatrog and he is hidden in the corner of the cantina. The Balmore vendor is hard to miss as he can be found at the entrance to the main base in bug town.

Customization 8 is available on Ilum at the Ilum Orbital Station from the Security key reward vendor.


Captain Kneely is in the center-left of the Orbital station and is only available to players who have attached a security key to their account.

At this stage I have not been able to find customizations 5 or 7. They may be randomly available from the Collector's Edition reward vendors, or even the security key reward vendors, but at this stage, they haven't been seen ingame.

It cost me 75 000 credits to purchase all available customizations for Kira. The reason I purchased them is that that the preview screen is tiny and uses low textures so I wouldn't have been able to provide you with proper images for comparison without purchasing the customizations.

A Hundred Seagulls Swoop down to Kill a Jedi

With patch 1.1.2 live on the servers, after two whole days of testing on the beta server (cough, cough) everything is running smooth as silk (cough). Players are delighted to find that they are no longer getting credit for some of the kills they are making in Ilum! Not only that, warzones are randomly not giving credit for wins. As you can imagine, when you add issues like players being able to stealth cap objectives in warzones, and the drop rate of tokens in PvP bags seemingly diminished, players are really excited to get out there and PvP (cough,  cough).


I didn't bother handing in my weekly last week so I went out to Ilum to get my daily completed this morning and the above screenshot is what I experienced. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find a pelican anywhere to save my ass (Finding Nemo fans will understand my comment).

I was able to get a couple of kills out by our base by tricking some unsuspecting Imperials into the range of the new turrets. Aside from that though, even after assembling a full operation group we were still outnumbered. Ilum at this stage involves the dominating faction holding center, farming the random spawns of armaments and destroying any groups that try to complete their dailies, and patch 1.1.2 has done nothing to fix it. If anything it's made it worse because the lag has increased. Even with a high end PC I was experiencing frame rates of as low as 4-5 fps during combat. Any time anything happened to do with the Ilum quest, the server would almost croak it. 


Despite all this I was able to complete my weekly Ilum mission as I had it 3/4 of the way completed from last week. I was also able to complete my weekly warzone missions along with my dailies. This took the better part of 4.5-5 hours. All that effort rewarded me with a total of 9 PvP bags. Every single bag gave me 15 Centurion Commendations, 7 Champion Commendations and a random amount of credits. Out of the 9 bags I received no tokens at all. The commendations, after completing both weeklies and two dailies, allow me to get no armor upgrades at all.

I might have just been unlucky this week and devs are swearing black and blue that the drop rate is still 25%. I guess time will tell but it seems like a lot of people in the SWTOR forums, myself included, are seeing zero drops of tokens.

The lag in itself, in my opinion, is enough reason to close the PvP section of Ilum down. The server is obviously not handling it and it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. As far as PvP awards go, every day this PvP zone remains open, the dominating faction gains an unfair advantage in gear against the opposite faction. This affects all PvP, not only in Ilum. Once the damage is done it will be hard to fix.

SWTOR Patching PvP with Duct Tape

Patch Notes for patch 1.1.2 were released yesterday and the patch has made its way onto the beta server for testing. There seams to be lots of confusion about the changes BioWare is making to PvP and specifically, PvP bags. Daily and weekly PvP missions award a PvP bag which has a random loot item in it and specific tokens. The random PvP item provided level 56 epic PvP gear and the tokens allowed you to save up and purchase level 51 gear. The randomness of this system caused all sorts of upset in the community as some players, due to luck, were able to gear up much faster than others. I found myself not PvPing at all on my level 50, as I've already got all my level 56 gear and the last three rewards I received were all duplicates of what I already have. So what they've done, in an attempt to fix this, are:

The number of commendations in Champion and Battlemaster Bags has been greatly increased, and the direct item trade tokens appear less frequently in Champion Bags. This change allows players to obtain PvP gear at a steady and significantly more predictable rate with an occasional bonus.
Then Gabe clarified after an uproar int he forums with this post:
It's obvious from comments here that the patch note is not specific enough, so we'll get it updated before the patch goes to the live servers. Here are some specifics:

Champion Bags now always contain 15 Centurion Commendations AND 7 Champion Commendations. Battlemaster Bags now always contain 15 Champion Commendations. So Centurion gearing up progression for new level 50s is increased significantly and Champion gearing up progression will be steady.

We do still intend on adding more intro level 50 PvP items as well as change how Battlemaster Commendations operate toward the same 'steady' goal. It's just the scope of that change was more than could be done in a weekly patch as it included vendor changes, conversions to existing commendations on players already, etc.

That being said, the current interim 'gearing up' system will change significantly when we introduce Ranked Warzones (aiming for Game Update 1.2). Stay tuned for more details on that.

Let me just point this out, since there's confusion about it.

The 1.1.2. bag changes have reduced the RNG element on drops DRAMATICALLY. Exactly what you guys asked for.

Instead of hoping to get specific item tokens, you now get (more) commendations that you can turn into an item of your choice. That is a lot more deterministic and reliable than opening bags and hoping for a token.

Now I must admit that I can see that these changes might make it worthwhile for me to go back and PvP again, as I can save up for the higher level tier gear even though I'll still be wasting a lot of Centurion Commendations. The new system gives me at least some reward. This doesn't alleviate the problems that still exist in open world PvP. At the moment the Tatooine PvP battlefield is a ghost town with no objectives and Illum is a gank or be ganked zone depending on what faction you are. The dominating faction controls the center and doesn't do anything else in the zone. There is no incentive to capture all the other bases when the oppossing faction is hardly making an appearance. 

I still believe that Illum needs to be re-thought and Bioware need to take a close look at other open world PvP zones in other popular MMOs for some ideas on balance and making the zone fun.

It's all about the color of your lightsaber

I recently got excited when I found out that you can get a white lighsaber crystal ingame. A player going by the name of CatchDeathwalker became legendary overnight after posting screenshots of the first white lightsaber ingame. His fame was short-lived when the developers confirmed that he had actually used an exploit to get that color crystal. Looking through history, it looks like CatchDeathwalker had actually found the color exploit in beta and then used it in live. According to the Devs, action has been taken on this idiot's account. If you're going to exploit, or use a known bug to get something that you shouldn't have, it's probably not wise to brag about it in the forums! It's definitely not a good idea to insult the intellect of other players for not being able to work the exploit out. Overnight CatchDeathwalker has gone from legendary to hated in both the SWTOR forums and on Reddit.

But what's all the fuss about? Why do people get so excited about the color of lightsabers? For as long as I can remember, all Star Wars games have had some way to change the color of your lightsaber. I still remember the first time I saw Luke's green saber in Return of the Jedi. It's funny but the color of that humming blade can make all the difference. I personally hate the yellow/black color crystal supplied with a pre-order of SWTOR.

Part of the reason why people are so up in arms about colors of crystals is that data mining sites originally posted lots of different color crystals. A whole rainbow variety was available, and every Jedi, myself included, was desperately seeking how to discover these elusive colors. I even know of players who dumped level 40 Republic Jedi Knight avatars for the sole reason of not being able to get a purple lightsaber! Considering that the only purple lightsaber that you see in the movies is Mace Windus, I am surprised that purple is a Sith-only option in SWTOR!

So I have started a list of the different color crystals you can get and how to find or craft them. I will keep updating the list as i find more information and please, if you have any, let me know.

What we have here is a list of all of the currently available colors in the game, with information on how to get them (if we've found that yet). This information was gathered from both SWTOR official forums and Reddit, from a variety of different contributors.

Blue
This crystal pattern is learnt from an artiface trainer. High quality versions of this crystal are discovered through reverse engineering.

Cyan
REPUBLIC ONLY!!! Obtained from Columi gear, listed as "Light Blue" [LTBLUE]. Champion versions can be Cyan, but not removable.

Green
This crystal pattern is learnt from an artiface trainer. High quality versions of this crystal are discovered through reverse engineering. 

Magenta
This is one of the rarest items in the game. It is not acquired through reverse engineering. Also listed as "Light Red" [LTRED], Magenta has a few steps to do before you can get this one. Gargath, on Hoth drops a +33 Power schematic. Belsavis's Worldboss's, The Primal Destroyer, drops a +33 Endurance, a +33 Crit schematic and a +33 Power schematic.. CONFIRMED: drops from a nearby crystal formation that appears after you defeat the force ghost, seems only 1 crystal per formation, though no one else in the group had the frozen water to summon the ghost we could only try it once.



Orange
High level Artifice (lvl 400), also drops from Corusant Worldboss, Nar Shadda Worldboss and Ulgo Siegebreaker on Alderaan [Note - "Normal" gems can be found in vendor sabers/gear as well]

Purple
EMPIRE ONLY!!! Tier 2 Empire Columi Gear, obtained via Hardmode Eternity Vault [Unconfirmed]. They can also be obtained from PvP sabers, but YOU CANNOT remove the crystal.

Red
This crystal pattern is learnt from an artiface trainer. High quality versions of this crystal are discovered through reverse engineering.

White
The white crystal "found" by CatchDeathwalker was confirmed by Bioware to be a fraud. It is not available inagme at the moment.

Yellow
This crystal pattern is learnt from an artiface trainer. High quality versions of this crystal are discovered through reverse engineering.

Taking Full Advantage of Bonus XP Leveling

Now that my main character is level 50 and fairly well geared, I'm spending some more time exploring other classes and their class stories. The problem is that I have already done all of the side quests three times now! So although I am enjoying the main class story lines, which are fresh and new for each class, I'm finding myself not wanting to repeat the hundreds of side missions yet again. 

To avoid them I'm playing avatars at the same time and taking full advantage of rested XP. As you can see in the screenshot here, I have three quarters of a bar available in rested XP. The green outline indicates how much double experience I will get. The double experience applies to all NPC kills but does not include the actual experience you get from the quests or from space. With three quarters of a bar of rested experience I will be getting double XP for all my kills for up to three levels. This is allowing me to skip a lot of the side quests on most of the planets for all my alt avatars.

To get rested experience, all you need to do is log out in a cantina or on your ship. Rested experience will cap out at a full bar. 

Other things I'm doing to avoid side missions are the daily space missions, which are quick and profitable, and also PvP. Spending all my warzone commendations on gear for for my alt characters and their companions makes up for the loot that I missed out on getting by choosing to not do side missions.
